Brubeck (poem)
|
Dave Brubeck
Night. Working, listening to Brubeck on my bed, jazz
lazy, low swings. Amber glow--the lampshade, the candle,
the comforter.
I love your lolling piano, your sweet, singing sax.
Nothing is mine but work, and this room, accompanied
by the radioed tempo. Work is good,
love is great; movement better. Let us move
to the rhythm but stay right where we are. Brazen
shifts of music, and I want to stay right here.

Minga: Teens Fighting Sexual Exploitation
|
CosmoGirl magazine recently rewarded young leaders with a "Born to Lead" 2008 award. Some of them received grants for their causes. One girl that I was inspired by is named Katie Simon (16). She went to a leadership camp in Mexico and learned the facts of child sex trafficking, and has raised more than $57 thousand dollars for this cause since then, even beginning her own org called "Minga: teens fighting sexual exploitation". It sounds like an incredible opportunity to get teens involved globally beginning in their own community, to travel with this group to countries (right now it seems mostly South American), and to speak at youth conferences.
Official site: http://mingagroup.org

AGE: 16
HOMETOWN: Boston, MA
ABOUT: Katie is the founder of Minga, a youth-run, nonprofit group that works to end sex trafficking by raising money and awareness. The word "Minga" is Quechan, a South American language, meaning "the community coming together for the collective benefit." Learn what you can do to help by visiting MingaGroup.org.

This only a test: Tackling the GRE
|
Standardized tests may be your forte or your weakest link but they will be part of any application for graduate school. I know after taking the SAT for admission to college that I had hoped to never see another standardized test again. Unfortunately, that simply was not possible.
The GRE, or Graduate Record Examination, is basically a grown up version of the SAT. The test includes the same sections: Verbal, Analytical and Writing. As before, expanding your vocabulary can only help you with the verbal section. I know that many people often use flashcards to learn hundreds of the most frequently used words. For me, it was more useful to learn to recognize word roots because I have a hard time with rote memorization. This test will require you to brush off those rusty math skills that you likely have not used for years. I didn’t find anything too complicated, but preparing for the test will allow you to be comfortable on test day.
I found the biggest adjustment was becoming accustomed to a computer-administered test. You can’t make notes beside the reading passages. Knowing the computer actually increases the difficulty of each test item following every correct answer until you miss an answer. I personally think this is ETS’ way of playing mind games with test takers. The key to avoiding a whirlwind of worry about the correctness of your answers is learning how to pace yourself before taking the real test. While practice tests will not exactly capture the testing experience, you can follow the same rules as the real exam.
Keep in mind that your test scores are valid for five years. Even if you are not sure that you want to go to grad school soon, you can save yourself some trouble by taking the GRE sooner rather than later. Because you can schedule the test on your own schedule, you can choose how much time you will need to prepare even if you are working fulltime. For those still in college, the summer months are perfect for preparing and then taking the GRE since there is more free time. While it’s no picnic, The GRE may be as close as you can get to having a stress-free testing experience.

Ohi Day + όχι !
Related to country: Greece
|
Researching for a book right now and came across this:
Celebrated throughout Greece, Cyprus and the Greek communities around the world on October 28 each year, Okhi Day (also spelled Ohi Day, Oxi Day, or Ochi Day, Greek: Επέτειος του «'Οχι», Anniversary of the "No") commemorates Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas's (in power from August 4, 1936 until January 29, 1941) rejection of the ultimatum made by Italian dictator Mussolini on October 28, 1940.
This ultimatum, which was presented to Metaxas by the Italian ambassador in Greece, Emanuele Grazzi, on October 28, 1940, at dawn (04:00 AM), after a party in the German embassy in Athens, demanded that Greece allow Axis forces to enter Greek territory and occupy certain unspecified "strategic locations" or otherwise face war. It was allegedly answered with a single laconic word: όχι or no.
Inspiring. Cultural stands give me shivers down my spine based on fortitude and principle alone. Whether it's defiance against occupation or a backlash against sexual abuse, standing up against authority or an entity can be just too inspirational for words.

HISTORICAL DAY IN MY HOUSEHOLD!!
|
Now, I am not one to use all caps to emphasize, but THIS is an historic event! Just moments ago:
Mom:You won't believe what your father said today.
Dad: No, no, grumble grumble....
Me (bolting upright at my Dad being embarrassed): WHAT??!
Mom: Go ahead, tell her.
Dad: No. Well, I was just saying... We were watching them talk about gay rights and civil unions today and...
Me: Yeah??!?!
Dad: ...And I said I didn't know what all the stink was about. (Gigantically loooong pause) ...If they want to get married, let them get married.
Me (doing an infinite amount of cartwheels in the living room): Yes! Yes! YES!
Dad: Well I've always been pro-civil union. But if they want to make a big stink about getting married, let them get married. If they just want to call it "marriage"--
Me: YESSS! YESSS! Yeahhh! (Fingers pointing, hips gyrating in celebration.) We win, Kodi (my dog), we win!! And when I say "we" (point at myself) I don't mean gay people. I mean "we" (pointing at myself and Kodi), the liberals in the hooouse!!
And then I did a few more dance moves.
And THEN I tried to record him saying it so that I could post it all over the Internet and send it to my sister, but I couldn't sneak that out of him. Oh well, Prop 2 was passed this time around, but holy cow, if my Dad could give it a go, then who's next????!!
CHANGE? Yes, we can! Who said we couldn't? :)

The Civic Action Free University -- An Upgrade for User Convenience
|
G'Day All --
Based on user feedback, a very simple (but perhaps significant) change has been made to The Civic Action Free University's web page.
If you would like to have a look, go to the site, at:
http://www.tcafu.net
... and check the newly added:
>>> Important Notice for First-Time Visitors <<<
The problem that many new users were having seemed to be caused by the very normal habit of just scrolling down the page, in order to see what's there. But, because the page is so extensive, the scrolling process tended to become a confusing and "eye-glazing" experience.
The hope is that the simple -- but quite prominent -- new note at the beginning of the page will encourage new visitors to use the "Site Contents and Instant Access" panel, thereby greatly simplifying familiarization with the page's contents.
But, of course, the effectiveness of this modification will be determined by the "real world" experience reported by site visitors.
If you have any reactions -- pro or con -- please feel free to let me know.

Unite for Refugees United
|
I was not about to miss the change to blog today as part of the Bloggers United effort to support refugees. When I learned about the theme for today this summer, I was excited to write. But since I have started working as an AmeriCorps VISTA for the Partnership for the Advancement and Immersion of Refugees, this has taken on a newfound importance for me to raise awareness about the challenges that refugees face.
This cause is particularly personal after meeting some of the children that have been directly affected by the escalating crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Violence in recent weeks has escalated to an untenable level. While violence is an obvious contributor to the high mortality rates, the majority of deaths are caused by preventable and treatable diseases. Because the infrastructure in eastern Congo has been practically decimated, authorities cannot deliver much needed food and medical supplies to the people who need them.
The lucky ones who survive violence and disease can spend years in makeshift refugee camps in neighboring countries. Refugee resettlement is an action of last resort; less than 1 percent of identified refugees are relocated to other countries. The emotional impact of relocation from leaving one’s home under duress complicates adjustment to life in a new country. Resettlement agencies offer direct assistance for the first six months including job placement and housing. As one can imagine, six months is not truly enough time to adjust.
The youth that I work with encounter more difficulties because they have to learn English quickly, adjust to differences in the school system, and sometimes need remediation to be at the same level with their classmates. All of these challenges in addition to the stigma that refugees sometimes face when the public confuses refugees with immigrants. Not to say that discrimination is justified against immigrants; adjustment becomes more complicated as a result of ignorance.
Events like Bloggers United provide a great opportunity to help break through the ignorance. For information about refugees worldwide, check out the following resources.

Women's Playwright Initiative (Orlando/Central FL)
About this category: Arts & Media
|
When I went to a Red Chair Project meeting a few months ago, I got out of the car at the same time as (and ended up sitting beside) the Fundraiser Chair for the Women's Playwright Initiative. This was our first introduction, a lucky opportunity because it allowed us to brainstorm together and connect over issues important to us: creativity, advocacy, and empowerment for women/girls.
So, I gave her my contact info in hopes that my skill set would come to benefit her organization, and she recently contacted me to join as a board member for WPI. If I manage to handle the volunteer load for it (10 hours a month PLUS the advocacy work I do for 3 other organizations ♪♫☆), then I think this'll be a fruitful collaboration.
